While agile media brands like Yahoo and Google are ramping up online coverage, big broadcast is hitting India's train lines.
Immersed broadcasting
BBC isn't just covering the month long elections, it is immersing itself in them with the India Election Train. The BBC branded train - borrowed from Indian Railways - will visit 8 key locations, traveling 6000 km in 18 days.
Stopping at Haryana today, the train will call at Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Patna and Allahabad, before returning to Delhi.
Comprehensive coverage
Nazes Afroz, executive director, South Asia BBC explains the rationale, "We aim to cover it in the most comprehensive way. During this train journey, BBC reporters aim to investigate what Indians want from the upcoming elections and the key themes surrounding it."
Multimedia, multi-platform and multilingual
The trip will feature 40 journalists and reporters from across the BBC's network, reports will be broadcast in 12 languages across 14 BBC services. Utilising all BBC platforms, news will be broadcast through video, audio, pictures, blogs and television.
