Poll shows massive support for investment in space exploration

Some western commentators have questioned India's investment in the Chandrayaan Space program, suggesting instead money should be spent alleviating poverty. India Insights measured enthusiasm for the project in India.

Using the Linkedin poll application India Insights was able to measure enthusiasm for mega investment in Chandrayaan. This poll gave Indian citizens the chance register their opinion.

Emphatic response

To get a sense of Indian public mood, the question was asked, "Given India's poverty levels is Chandrayaan space mission justifiable". The response was emphatic - 27 of 32 respondents (84%) voted "Yes".

Feedback showed that many feel investment in science and technology is the best way to alleviate social problems and increase country-wide opportunity.

New revenue streams

Development of commercial satellite launches and spin off industries are likely to increase foreign investment, resulting in improved skills, job creation, improved infrastructure and new revenue streams. In addition, programs like Chandrayaan help ensure the best scientific minds remain in the country.

Hope and pride

The program is also a sign that India has arrived. There is pride that exploring space signals India's ability to compete with more established nations.
