Responding to the question, "Which coalition government outcome would be best for India's economy?" - results indicate a possible change in national leadership. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) controlled alliance was the preferred option for 15 of 30 (50%) respondents.
Indian National Congress (INC), the most powerful party and leader of the United Progressive Alliance, the current ruling coalition scored just 40%.
Appeal to age groups
Interestingly, when comparing age groups (see below) core support for a BJP Government is found with voters aged between 25 and 54, support for the INC is polarized between the young (18-24 year olds) and the old (55 years +).10% stated they thought neither option was good for economic recovery.
"It's the economy stupid"
Leeni O'Connor of Tesco Hindustan Services feels that INC have the edge on economic issues, "With People like Manmohan Singh and Palaniappan Chidambaram, I think Congress will do better, BJP needs someone to step up and speak the language the economy would like to hear".
This a view shared by Rana Daspupta, CEO of Talent Management Services, "Current Congress (INC) controlled UPA Government, with all its flaws is the best bet if we are to progress in to a true global economic power".
BJP has its supporters, Ronak Sheth of Next Link comments that although the parties are similar, BJP are a better choice due to the work undertaken and completed during their previous tenure led by A.B. Vajpayee (1999 - 2004). This said he concludes by saying, "I strongly feel neither of them are in a position to alleviate the country's present social and economic problems".
Critical of current and previous INC Governments, Kumar Sridhar of Clincorp comments, "We've got to start thinking of our future and that seems to be jeopardized right now with the way the current Government is functioning".
Shankar Balan of Levi Strauss India offers the opinion that a BJP led coalition with the INC offers India greatest economic hope.
Curse of the coalition
Hoping that India can avoid the chaos that has at times tainted India's current coalition, O'Connor hopes there is an outright winner and clear mandate to govern, "My only hope is we have a clear majority and someone wins without need for a coalition".
