The deal - proposed by GM India, yet to be ratified by Detroit HQ - follows launch of the Chevrolet Volt petrol-electric hybrid. The Volt and the Reva deal provide evidence of how GM is trying to divorce itself from gas guzzling models.
"We have been pursuing opportunities for commercial application of alternative fuel options, including bio-diesel, jatropha, electric and fuel cell, hydrogen, with many parties for quite some time," said GM India's vice-president of corporate affairs, P. Balendran.
Reva return on investment
With the Volt expected to be launched across India, GM India now plan to use Reva's electric vehicle technology to roll out variants of its Chevrolet Spark in India and across international markets. Already committed to accelerating their own production, Reva now have chance to cash in on their investment in R&D.
Flow of technology heads west
As the flow of technology heads west, the deal is further recognition that the world largest vehicle manufacturers can learn much from India auto's ability to create low cost, cheap, green vehicles
